How to Change Our World

Change Our World

Let’s talk about how to change our world.

I was on my way to the park the other day when the song Go Light Your World began playing on the radio. The chorus is as follows:

Carry your candle, and run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, confused and torn
And hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world
Take your candle, and go light your world

I cried.

I know, I know…

“Take your candle, go light YOUR world.”

I don’t know the artist’s specific reasoning behind using “your” instead of “the” but I’d like to talk about my interpretation of it.

In my opinion, that one word makes all the difference. It brings me back to reality and reminds me of a simple truth. We may not all change the world but we can all change OUR world.

Too often, we judge our impact and determine our value by whether or not the world knows our name. We feel inferior to other Christians because we’re not going on mission trips across seas or because we haven’t been called to ministry.

The difference we make for God’s Kingdom does not depend on our title or our location. As Christians, in order to change the world, we must first change OUR world.

How to Change Our World

In Matthew 5:16, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told the crowd, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

GOD NEEDS CHRISTIANS EVERYWHERE. When we ask Jesus into our hearts, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within us. Therefore, it is Christ’s light that shines through us, not our own.

As disciples, we should be striving to reflect the nature of Christ through both our words and actions EVERYWHERE WE GO.

THAT is a worthy life…a life spent pointing those around us to the ultimate source of our light, Jesus Christ…a life spent “seeking out the helpless, confused, and torn” RIGHT WHERE WE ARE.

We are held responsible for the individuals God has entrusted to us. Lighting the whole world starts in our communities, our schools, our jobs, our businesses, our organizations, our homes.

It’s a group effort.

It requires all of us, the collective, taking our “candles” and shining the light of Christ on the world around us.

When we all work together to be a light in our present darknesses, the light of Christ naturally begins to extend throughout the world.

“Take your candle, go light your world.”

I was playing basketball a few nights ago when something near the tree line caught my eye. I picked my basketball up and walked closer to get a better look. There, just on the outskirts of the woods, were about 15-20 lightning bugs twinkling in the darkness amongst the brush.

I walked closer.

A wave of peace rushed over me as I stood, motionless, fascinated by their light show. Suddenly, I found myself humming Go Light Your World.

I thought about how the two (lightning bugs and that song) relate.

Lightning bugs may not light up the entire night sky, but they light up the sky around them and we are JUST AS MUCH AFFECTED.

I don’t speak bug, but I assume fireflies don’t keep track of the number of human beings that have stopped dead in their tracks, mesmerized by the light they’re emitting.

In fact, I assume fireflies have no earthly idea they’ve even caught our attention.

They just shine.

They are simply good stewards of the light they radiate, and we feel drawn to them because of it.

Isn’t this what we, as Christians, are called to do? Be good stewards of the light we radiate so that others are drawn to the source of that light, Jesus Christ?

A lightning bug is not any less of a bug because it lights up “only” a corner of the night sky.

In the same way, we are not any less of a Christian because we are “only” lighting up our small corner of the world. Making a difference in this world for God’s Kingdom starts with normal people like you and me, doing normal things in normal places, in the name of Jesus.

It’s not about numbers or titles or locations. It’s about reflecting the nature of Christ and pointing others towards Him RIGHT WHERE WE ARE.

We may not all change the world, but we can all change our world. Shine the light of Christ in your present darkness!
