How to Find Your Identity in Christ (and Why You Need to!)

Identity in Christ

Words hurt, don’t they? When they are not cultivated thoughtfully and carefully, they can cause a lot of damage to our souls. Unless you are secure in the way God made you, the words and opinions of others can, and will, alter the way you view yourself…but finding your identity in Christ is not always easy.

2 Corinthians 1:22 reminds us, “He has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts.”

Sometimes my personality and character is challenged and I unintentionally allow the opinions of others define my worth rather than finding my identity in Christ.

I’m a pretty confident person. It takes a lot to get me down; my feelings are not easily hurt. I can usually shrug off the words spoken over me, but not always.

There are definitely times I believe who I am is too much, or not enough. At times, the words of others cause me to adjust my actions and second guess my intentions. They cause me to doubt my personality and question the way God made me.

Even worse, they make me feel as if I have to be a lesser version of myself in order to be accepted.

In other words, I downplay my identity in Christ. Instead of overlooking an offense, I dwell on it. I feel as if, because I don’t matter to someone, I matter to no one at all.

Do you ever feel that way?

Do you ever feel like who you are is either too much or not enough?

I have to remind myself (more times than I’d like to admit!) my identity is not found in how others see me but in how I am seen by God.

We have to peel off the labels others have stuck on us because there is only one label that truly defines us and it reads, “I AM HIS.”

The thoughts and opinions of others, even those that flatter us, will never satisfy us. When we get too caught up in what others think of us, we lose sight of our eternal value.

Today, right now, I hope and pray you know this: YOU MATTER TO GOD.

Not just sometimes.

All the time.

People will judge you and criticize you no matter what you do, but the opinions of others do not define you. They are not what give your life meaning and value.

Their perception of you is not who you truly are.

When we find our identity in Christ, God is glorified. He wants us to rejoice in His creation by living out our identity in Christ unashamedly. His voice is the only voice that matters.

Your identity in Christ doesn’t change with the wind. It is not fleeting. It is firm and steady and of infinite value.

Please don’t change. Please do not reduce who you are and who God made you to be in order to please people.

Don’t water down your personality to fit this invisible mold that holds no meaning.

Embrace every nook and cranny of your identity in Christ and live it out boldly and confidently.

You will be rejected by the world in more ways than you can possibly imagine…but even when the world and the people in it reject you, God doesn’t.

He chooses you, as you are.

You are not too much or too little to Him, so cover your ears and stop believing the lies because your identity is found in Christ, not in the opinion of man.

Such wise words! This is such a struggle for me, trying to overcome my past and embrace the person I am now, all the while constantly measuring myself based on what others think of me. I needed this reminder today! Thank you 🙂 also…you should never underestimate the power you have to motivate and encourage others. You have been blessed with a gift! I can’t wait to hear more from you.

AMEN. I need to reaffirm my worth in CHRIST every day. Thank you for this truth. A reminder we all surely need to believe.

I needed to draft you one tiny note to finally say thanks a lot the moment again just for the fantastic techniques you have contributed here. This is so wonderfully generous with people like you to deliver publicly just what a number of us could have made available for an e-book to get some cash for their own end, especially since you might well have tried it if you wanted. Those principles as well worked to be the easy way to be sure that other individuals have a similar dream much like my very own to know the truth a great deal more when it comes to this matter. I am certain there are millions of more pleasant instances ahead for individuals that find out your website.
