“When you delay instant gratification, you will experience long-term satisfaction.” — Author Unknown
I received a $25.00 gift card to Mardel a few weeks ago (BEST GIFT EVER).
If you watch my Instagram stories or know me at all, you know I visit Mardel every time I’m in the area where I head straight to the $1 book section. I’m 100% for getting more bang for my buck.
FYI: Several months ago, I saw a book I wanted (The Best Yes) at regular price, on sale in the $5.00 section, AND on sale in the $1.00 section!? WHAT????? Curious as to why the SAME BOOK was marked at THREE DIFFERENT PRICES, I asked a worker about it. Apparently books are shifted around according to how long they’ve been in the store. Basically, the longer a book sits on the shelf, the cheaper it gets. SO, if you’re at Mardel and see a book you want at regular price (or even $5.00 or $3.00!), DON’T PICK IT UP JUST YET. It’s likely that SAME BOOK is on sale for $1.00! YOU’RE WELCOME.
Anyway, I’m always looking for books on my reading list in the $1.00 section. Every time I go to Mardel, either I find a book I want for $1.00, jump for joy and purchase it, or I leave empty-handed.
That being said, I made my first gift card purchase today: Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic for $1.00
As I was walking (okay…slightly skipping) out with my purchase, I found myself thinking about the importance of delaying instant gratification and being patient.
Stay with me.
I’m definitely tempted to use my gift card on one new book that costs $20.00, thus using up the majority of the $25.00 gift card.
However, rather than choosing one book to buy, I take my sweet time. I delay instant gratification in hopes of getting as many books as possible with one gift card!
Sure, this one book may satisfy me now…but who knows how many books from my reading list will go on sale later!? Who knows what I’ll be missing out on or how many books I’ll be able to buy at a later date for the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY!?
Although I obviously want to buy all the books, I delay instant gratification and make myself wait…and wait…and wait…until I know I can get the most books for the least amount of money.
I’d much rather be patient and buy 20 books on my reading list for $1.00 each with my gift card than buy only one book on my reading list for $20.00!
In other words, I know being patient now will save me from feeling regretful later.
I can either rejoice over one book in a week’s time or 20 books in a year’s time. The choice is mine to make…and I’ll be choosing the latter!
As humans, we’re tempted to settle for what’s right in front of us.
We’re already choosing Option A without ever even SEEING Option B simply because we want instant gratification.
But when we settle for what’s right in front of us, we miss out on God’s ABUNDANT blessings. He’s been known to take something small and double, triple, or even QUADRUPLE it…but we have to give Him time to allow everything to come into fruition!
When we delay instant gratification, God makes the wait completely worth it.
Instead of blessing us with ONE good thing, He blesses us with several GREAT things.
The best real-life example that comes to mind is the time my high school friends and I had planned a trip to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, for different reasons, many of them were unable to go at the time we had originally planned.
Because I DESPERATELY wanted to see Ellen, I tried to figure out a way to go ASAP.
EVERYTHING FELL THROUGH.
For a reason I could not see at the time, God wanted me to wait.
When my two college best friends found out I wasn’t going on the trip, they immediately grabbed my arm and said, “WE’RE GOING. WE’RE TAKING YOU.” So, instead of going with my high school friends that summer, Madi, Rylea, and I went the following January.
To make a long story short, we flew to Los Angeles to try and get Day-Of Tickets to Ellen (I DREAM OF BEING A TALK SHOW HOST, YOU GUYS). However, we misunderstood how Day-Of Tickets worked. Well, one thing led to another, and another, AND THEN ANOTHER. By God’s grace, we found ourselves in the Riff Raff Room for The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…I was blessed with the opportunity to share my dreams of being a talk show host with THREE DIFFERENT ELLEN EMPLOYEES! You can read the full story about our adventure with The Ellen DeGeneres Show here.
The point is…had I gone over the summer and settled for instant gratification (seeing Ellen STAT), I wouldn’t have experienced the fullness of God’s gift and the abundant blessings He had in store.
By going at a later time, God gave me WAY more bang for my buck. He blessed me with more than I could have ever imagined or dreamed of.
It’s likely God has something in store for you that is bigger and better than anything you could ever imagine or dream of!
I can get 20 books with my gift card if I’m patient and buy them when they’re $1.00. Likewise, God can take what we want and MULTIPLY IT!
If you find yourself restless and tempted to settle for what’s right in front of you, be patient.
For a reason you cannot see right now, God wants you to wait.
He delights in giving His kids more bang for their buck.
Don’t settle for instant gratification. Be patient and wait on God’s timing.
