To the Person Who Is Afraid to Say Yes to God

afraid to say Yes to God

This blog post is for the person who is afraid to say yes to God.

You’re in a time of transition, standing at a crossroads. There are two roads before you. You’re nervous and scared…the future, your future, is unknown. You’re unsure of which path to take and you’re just doing what you can to get by. Deep down, you have these dreams and visions and passions. Your heart stirs and longs to follow them, too…but there’s this unbearable weight on your shoulders…this burden holding you back—society, parents, friends, neighbors.

You love Jesus so much and you’ve witnessed His power in your life. You know God has big plans for you and that those plans are good…but you’re afraid to say yes to God. Terrified, really.

You feel held back due to finances and your need for stability and control. There are so many questions you’re wrestling with in the back of your mind—about life, your future, and what you’re capable of.

You doubt and question your potential at times and feel overwhelmed. It would be easy to go with the flow of society and stick to the status quo. Nobody would laugh at you or call you crazy.

But would you ever shake this feeling in the pit of your stomach? Is a comfortable, safe, and settled life worth a lifetime of regret?

You feel encouraged and inspired by the people around you who are trusting God with the unknown and walking in obedience…but you’re not brave like them…or are you?????

The way I see it, you can take one of two paths: Path A or Path B (see below).

SIDE NOTE: I had my sweet friend Avery Curtis sketch this for me. You can (AND TOTALLY SHOULD) follow her on Facebook and Instagram. She is the most talented artist I know and her artwork will actually change your life.

Path A leads to an abundant life…the life God calls us to live. By choosing this path, by choosing to walk in obedience, it’s inevitable you’ll experience:

  • Peace
  • Freedom
  • Joy
  • Passion
  • Happiness
  • Dreams
  • Purpose
  • Adventure
  • Sacrifice
  • Calling
  • Obedience
  • Surrender
  • Love
  • Relief
  • Trust

Path B, on the other hand, consists of the following:

  • Disappointment
  • Convenience
  • Complacency
  • Control
  • Popularity
  • Settling
  • Discontentment
  • Pressure
  • Loneliness
  • Emptiness
  • Control

The plans and dreams in our hearts, the things we’re passionate about, they are in no way random or a coincidence.

They were gifted to us. God chose us to bear them.

Path B is safe, though. It’s comfortable. Convenient. Secure. You’ve got “full” control. Path B even has a stamp of approval! Everybody’s taking it. It’s easy and there are definite guarantees! But you know what???? YOU KNOW WHAT??????????????

Comfort does not equal calling.

Convenience does not equal calling.

Control does not equal calling.

Even though this path is popular and makes total sense from the world’s perspective, it’s filled with loneliness and disappointment.

Everyone expects us to take this path, too…which is absolutely ridiculous if you ask me.

afraid to say yes to God

If we want to pursue our calling, our precious and worthy calling, we have to be willing to lay it all down for the sake of God’s Kingdom.

By sacrificing and surrendering what we’ve always known and loved, we draw closer to the One who sacrificed everything for us…the One who knows us intimately and loves us deeply.

To say it’s 100% worth it is an understatement.

If this is you, if you’re unsure of which path to take and afraid to say yes to God, I completely understand. I’ve been there. It’s hard and doesn’t seem fair.

How could God leave us with such a choice?

It seems so scary.

Choose His way.

I beg you

Take Path A.

Stop being afraid to say yes to God.

It will require you to surrender and sacrifice things you never thought you’d be able to let go of but it is, by far, the grandest adventure of all. It will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done…but it will also be the most remarkable thing you’ve ever experienced.

From the outside looking in, Path B may look like the path to take…but once you start walking it, you’ll come to find it’s nothing like you imagined it to be. And, you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering “WHAT IF????”

There will always be something missing in your life because what God intended for you goes FAR BEYOND financial security and worldly approval and doing what’s convenient.

If you are afraid to say yes to God, know this: you cannot pursue both society’s standard of success and God’s. You have to choose one or the other.

If you’ve been afraid to say yes to God and take Path A, please know that it’s not too late to turn around. You can choose to take God’s path and pursue the passions and dreams He has handpicked for you TODAY. God allows u-turns and backtracks. Don’t let society tell you otherwise.

Don’t spend the rest of your life lying in bed at night or sitting at red lights thinking about everything you wanted to do but DIDN’T do because you were scared or wanted to fit in.

Join this community and let’s do this thing together. Let’s be cheerleaders for each other and root each other on. Because getting a taste of the worthy and abundant life God has for us is worth noting and sharing.

If I follow His plan for me, and you follow his plan for you, we can inspire others to follow God’s plan for them, too!!!! LIKE HOW COOL IS THAT!?!?

The Kingdom gets built by the bold and courageous and SURRENDERED and OBEDIENT…the ones who step out into faith in their corner of the world and live with arms wide open for a purpose far bigger than themselves!!!!!!

WE ARE KINGDOM BUILDERS.

IT’S TIME WE START ACTING LIKE IT!!!!!

You can join this community by clicking here. BUT BE CAREFUL, by clicking this button, you’re saying “I don’t want to settle anymore.”

Because that’s what this community is about: dreaming big, praying boldly, having faith, living purposefully, and being a light in the darkness.

As Jordan Dooley says,

So if you’re afraid to chase your passion for fear of being called crazy, be crazy with me anyway. Jump out of your safe little boat. I promise, with a little bit of faith, some stink, sweat, and your eyes fixed on God’s power over your life when the waves start crashing, you WILL walk on water. Even when the world says you can’t. It’s like it’s what you were made to do or something.

I want this to be your year. Not the year that everything suddenly happens (because it won’t be that at all, HAHAHAHA #SpoilerAlert) but the year you begin. The year you choose to surrender your plans and pursue the passions God has placed in your heart.

You ARE brave. You CAN do this.

Take a deep breath and remember all the times God proved Himself to be faithful. Stop settling. Take risks and take chances. Pursue the things God has placed in your heart and find ways to use your gifts and talents.

Don’t worry about what other people will think about you.

Just be obedient and walk confidently into the unknown trusting God’s plan for your life is far better than the one you have planned for yourself.

Learn to be okay with not having all the answers.

Just walk.

Surrender.

Go.
